Details on this deer have been certified by Sportsman Deer Processing and Bullard Taxidermy Chris Newell was not expecting much the afternoon he encountered this buck. It was 70 degrees and the wind was blowing pretty good so he decided to go sit in a shooting house on a food plot behind his house. This was a stand he had not hunted in much in the past, but it was close and was the perfect day to find a little peace in the outdoors. Chris was settled in the stand by 4:00 p.m. and was really not expecting an eventful hunt. Around 5:15 p.m., Chris caught movement in the corner of his eye and as he looked in that direction he spotted the rack of a buck that was just the other side of a rise in the field. The buck was following a doe out onto the food plot. Chris waited for the buck to come over the rise and present a broadside shot. Chris raised his Browning .270 to take the shot and could tell he was visibly shaken at the quality of this buck. He squeezed off the shot. A clean miss....Chris joked, "That has not happened much in the past." The buck bolted but did not run off the field. He stopped a short distance from the doe and looked back at her. Chris was able to compose himself and take another shot that dropped the buck in his tracks. Chris said, "I have been hunting since I was a teenager and this is the first time I remember getting that shook up over a buck." Chris has several game cameras that he operates on his property and he had not seen this buck on this property at all. However, a neighboring property owner had game camera photos on November 17th of this buck from a camera that is over 3 miles away from the food plot where Chris shot it. This really sheds light on the distance that these bucks will travel during rut. Chris mentioned that he really wished that he had a great story to go along with this harvest, such as a several mile stalk...but it all came down to being in the right place at the right time. Since the harvest of this buck, it has restored faith in Chris and many hunters as to the fact that there are indeed still some great bucks in the area.
